Abstract

Background: Traditionally, palliative care has been relegated to the end-of-life stages of the oncology patient. However, current clinical evidence promotes a model of early integration alongside disease-modifying treatment. Despite the documented benefits, barriers to timely referral persist, affecting the quality of life and the comprehensive continuity of care.

Objective: To describe the importance of early referral to palliative care in oncology patients, analyzing its impact on symptom control, shared decision-making, and the optimization of healthcare resources.

Methods: A descriptive analysis was developed based on a narrative review of updated literature and international clinical guidelines. Dimensions such as comprehensive pain management, psychosocial well-being, reduction of therapeutic futility, and care transitions were analyzed.

Results: Early referral—ideally from the diagnosis of advanced disease—is associated with significant improvements in quality of life and a more effective symptomatic response. Furthermore, it facilitates advance care planning, decreases unnecessary aggressive interventions at the end of life, and empowers a truly interdisciplinary approach. In this strategic context, the coordinating role of specialized nursing assumes an unavoidable prominence and is fundamental to comprehensively supporting the patient and their family nucleus. Nursing intervention is positioned as the axis that guarantees the cohesion of care, continuous education, and a safe transition in healthcare.

Conclusion: The early integration of palliative care constitutes an indispensable quality standard in modern oncology. Its implementation requires overcoming the sequential model through professional education and a person-centered vision, where proactive leadership and care management by nursing are decisive in ensuring successful and humanized continuity of care.
